Many people live in the countryside and have the opportunity to have chickens so why not make the best of it and make some extra cash when prices are the highest they have ever been.
So lets deep dive into the question; How much money can you make selling chicken eggs
How Much Money Does a Chicken Cost?
If you are a person who is looking into the possibility of raising chickens and start selling eggs you are probably looking into how much chickens cost? Because that is something you have to take into calculation when you are starting out.
There are different prices for baby chicks, started pullets and laying hens. The prices are depending on the age, breed and looks of the chicken, so the average cost is around $1 to $100. Here are price guidelines for 2022:
- Baby chicks (0 – 4 weeks): Price from $1 to $10 depending on breed.
- Pullets (4 weeks – 16 weeks): About $15 – $25
- Laying Hens: About $10 to $100, depending on breed
If you do not know what a teenage chicken is called, it is called a pullet for females and cockerels for males.
Best Chickens To Buy?
If you are new and starting out I would recommend buying older pullets 12 – 14 weeks old or young laying hens so you do not have to start out with baby chicks. They need a lot of care and that might be overwhelming as a new chicken farmer.
Best Chicken Breeds for Eggs
Like any breedable animal on the planet there are different breeds for different kinds of purposes. If we look at chickens there are some breeds that are better at layings fresh eggs.
Here are the 10 best egg laying chicken breeds.
- Australorp

- Plymouth Rock
- Red Star
- Rhode Island Red
- Spanish
- Sussex
What Does a Chicken Eat?
Chickens eat pretty much anything they get their beaks on. Just like humans chickens need a healthy diet containing carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and water. If you have the possibility you should have them walking free because it will reduce feed costs, it is great for supplementing the chickens diet because they will get their beaks on many different food sources and it is good for their health.
But to be sure that the chickens get all the food they need it is good to supplement with specialized chicken food. There are a few ones to choose from depending on the age and what needs the chickens have.
- Chicken Starter
- Medication Feed (help with immunity to coccidiosis)
- Layer Grower
- Layer Finisher
- Layer Feed
- Broiler Feed
- Feather Fixer Feed
- All Flock Feed
- Scratch Grain
If you are a farmer and have a lot of crops it is always nice to give them some oats, grains or pretty much anything you grow as an extra food source. The cheaper the eggs the better right?
How Many Eggs Can One Chicken Lay In a Day?

A chicken lays a maximum of 1 egg a day but sometimes they can skip a day. That is because the process takes 24 – 26 hours per egg. But a growing chicken can sometimes lay 2 eggs a day but that is a sign of overfeeding, so be aware of that.
How Many Eggs Can Four Chicken Lay In a Week?
If an average chicken lays 1 egg a day and we have 4 chickens that would be 4 eggs a day x 7 days. This gives us a total of 28 eggs a week, but I would round that down to 25-26 because the possibility of getting eggs everyday usually does not happen.
How Much Money Can You Make Selling Chicken Eggs
This calculation is kind of tricky because the prices on eggs are always moving and prices are a little bit higher now. According to the market pricing overview it looks like prices are going up and down.
But in this example I am going to use the data given to me from the price listings.
The retail price for a dozen fresh eggs range from $3.33 to $4.55.
Short Answer: You can easily sell a dozen eggs between $3 – $4 because people put a lot of value into organic and products produced locally. This means that you can sell each egg for $0.25 – $0.33 each.
For this example let’s say that you have 10 chickens and each chicken lays 6 eggs a week. This means that if 1 chicken lays 6 eggs a week that is 6 eggs x 10 chickens = 60 eggs a week.
So if you want to calculate how much money you can make in a week, first you calculate that you can sell your 60 eggs x 0,25$ each = $15 profit a week in the lower end and in the higher end you can make 60 x $0,33 = $19,8 profit a week.
This could be a monthly income up to $80 a week!
But as we all know nothing comes without expenses right so we have to calculate with that also.
How Many Chickens Do You Need To Make a Profit Selling Chicken Eggs
So how much money can you make selling chicken eggs? We know that we can make money selling chicken eggs and we know that there is a demand for chicken eggs because they are delicious! But you should also remember that this calculation is for chickens who can be outside 7-8 months a year and doesn’t need as much food.
But what we haven’t talked about yet is the different costs involving chickens.
So in this example we are going to calculate the startup cost of a small chicken business with 20 chickens, food and everything that needs to take into calculation before we start making profit.
This is a side hustle business so if you want to scale into a real business you have to dig into the different laws involving businesses.
List of costs:
Chickens: 20 (14 week) pullets – cost $400
Chicken Feed: 2.5 bags 50lb, $30 dollars each – total $75 a month.
Chicken House: $1000
Water + Electricity: $30 a month.
So we have a startup cost of $1505 but this could be more expensive and cheaper depending on what you prefer but this is the example I am using.
The chickens will take a few weeks to grow before they can lay eggs so we have to have food for 2 months bumping up the cost to $1580.
- 20 chickens laying 1 fresh egg a day is 20 x 30 = 600 eggs.
I am calculating that I can sell my chicken eggs for $0,33.
600 eggs x $0,33 = $198 a month.
The starting cost is $1580 and the monthly cost is $105, selling the eggs gives us an income of $198. So with these numbers it will take us 16 months to pay off the startup costs and leaves us with a profit of $93 a month.
But don’t let this discourage you, this is a calculation based on numbers I have found online and personal experience. If you have free running chickens, live in a warmer area, you have water available, you have loads of grass and some other animals you could easily share food and stuff from them cutting down costs even more. And if you have a good breed of chickens who lay big eggs, and you have customers paying a higher price for quality eggs locally produced you could easily make a lot of more money than that.
You could also hatch eggs and sell chickens yourself as an extra income too. If you save one week of eggs in this example you will have 140 chickens to sell in a few weeks and could sell up towards $2000 if they are a good breed and are still small chickens.
So there is money to be made!
